TRUTH: Let’s Get Metaphysical…

TRUE and TRUTH

Fundamentals (like Truth) can’t be perfectly defined. They must remain at least in part idea, awareness, perception, theory—because they are principles: the source, not product, of definition.

True and Truth are often confused. “I think Bob is stupid” may be true, but the Truth is that Bob may be in fact very smart.  True is an adjective, Truth is a noun.  Truth is, in fact, an absolute—a first principle—indisputable.  Like the Universe—nature itself—everything requires truth to even be (exist) in the first place.  (This means that truth must have preceded even the Universe.) True is a mere modifier with an opposite—false.  Don’t confuse it with truth.  Truth has no opposite, only an absence of itself.

But the concept (of Truth) has to be articulated to some degree so that we can deal

THE REALITY of CLIMATE CHANGE

THE TRUTH ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

global_warming_by_teabing1CLIMATE CHANGE IS A FACT. Temperatures are increasing and will continue to increase slowly in the immediate future.  Temperature rise will be minimal (perhaps 1 degree by 2020), accompanied by a slight rise in sea levels (nowhere near destructive) because of melting  (largely) arctic ice.  Floating ice already displaces 90-percent of its volume under water, so the increase in water volume due to melting will be limited to about 10-percent of the melted ice volume.  Antarctic ice is land-based, and its volume is increasing.

Currently Earth is in a (geologically well-documented) interglacial period, coming off a glacial period of the recent geologic past (10-12,000 years ago).  There have been, in fact, several prior glacial periods (and interglacial periods necessarily between); some have influenced mankind, and there’s no evidence that this pattern will not continue in the future.  Earth’s temperatures can be expected to vary in such a dynamic system, and they do. In other words, global warming is currently taking place as is its nature.

ETHICS and RELIGION

Is religion ethical?

Ethics in Religion?

What follows uses as an example the Catholic Church, for no other reason than its author, once a practicing Catholic, is most familiar with it. The same probably could be said of other wealthy denominations—the Anglican Church, for instance…

We hear of churches losing membership and the difficulty of attracting men to the priesthood. We also hear about the poverty, hunger and squalor lived by millions in the Third World and yes, other places as well.

On the other hand, we know about the glory of “Rome” and the vast riches on display at the Vatican, and can only guess at the sumptuous lives of the papacy and its minions who have few to answer to except themselves. The resources of the hierarchy are virtually limitless, and still growing.

But the subject of this short essay is not the diminishing of one of the richest institutions on

ETHICS UNPLUGGED: The Basics

ETHICS IS:  UNIVERSAL MORAL PRINCIPLE
Ethics: doing what's right
It’s Time…

UNIVERSAL: Every time, Everywhere

MORAL: Pertaining to Rules of Right Conduct

PRINCIPLE: A Fundamental Truth

Universal Moral Principle – the right thing, anywhere, every time. so,  Being Ethical is:  Doing the Right Thing, Everywhere, Every Time.

What’s Right?

What’s Right is that which acts in the best interests of humanity

Ethics supports the good—ideal—life.  It’s that branch of philosophy dealing with what one ought to do.  What one ought to do is not determined by any one person, no matter how learned, wise or kind, nor would it be affected by circumstance. Ethics does not evolve—it does not change with the passing of time.  It’s a universal given, a first principle. There’s only one path to be followed in any case: that which is in accordance with personal responsibility to humanity. One ought to do

MAKING ETHICAL DECISIONS

PERSONAL ETHICS:

MAKING ETHICAL DECISIONS

ETHICAL DECISIONS

DOING THE RIGHT THING

Ethics is founded in truth; therefore, ethical decisions usually are a matter of simply adhering to the truth.  In fact, if truth is not an issue, the problem usually is not an ethical one but one concerning personal values, and your decision will be based on those values.  You and only you are responsible for that decision, so you must be sure that you are making a decision that you can live with.  Forever. If truth is at issue, then you are faced with making an ethical decision.  That decision requires that you handle the situation honestly, and endeavor to do no harm to not only the people involved but humanity generally. However, such a decision may require ‘whistle-blowing,’ so you may run the risk of offending others.  It’s important to remember that

ETHICS ISSUES: ETHICAL GUIDELINES

ETHICAL ISSUES: ETHICAL GUIDELINES

How are you fixed for ethics? Integrity, principle, probity, honesty: concepts that often are overlooked, taken for granted or disregarded in today’s hectic world. ‘Business ethics’ simply isn’t; It deals with values and morals—the way we think things are—and tends to be arbitrary. The real ETHICS we’re talking about is more fundamental and powerful than either business or even legal ethics. This, the real ethics, represents the way things should be.

Ethics. What is it? Well, it’s not the plural of ethic nor is it difficult to define. Think of ethics as truth, and morality as applied truth, better known as honesty.

Can you see how this differs from business ‘ethics?’ Ethics is not debatable. It doesn’t vary with the situation. Nor does it vary with the law. The law is a product of society and can be changed in accordance with society’s wishes. Ethics
